The materials had already been ordered.The contractor expected the project to be straightforward: prepare the riverbank, install the gabion mats, fill them with stone, and finish the exposed section before the next rainy period.

Then the site inspection changed everything.Several cracks had appeared near the bottom of the bank. A section of soil had also moved toward the river.

The Original Assumption

Gabion mats were selected because they could cover a large surface area and provide protection against water-driven scour.

But the site inspection revealed that erosion had progressed further than expected.The lower part of the bank was losing soil beneath the surface. The upper section was beginning to lose its support.

The Design Was Changed Before Installation

Instead of abandoning gabion products altogether, the engineering team divided the bank into different zones.

This produced a more suitable combination:

·Gabion Baskets → structural support

·Gabion Mats → surface erosion protection

What the Project Taught the Buyer

The mistake was choosing a product before understanding the failure mechanism.

A gabion product should be selected according to the job it needs to perform.

Gabion mats make sense when the terrain is reasonably stable and the primary threat is surface scour. Gabion baskets become more relevant when the project also needs retaining and structural stabilization.

In this case, the problem was discovered before installation began.

That saved the project from an expensive lesson:

A good product can still be the wrong choice when it is applied to the wrong engineering problem.
